When they held the election for the next praetors, everyone was hesitant because of fear, and no one put himself up as a candidate. Finally Licinius Crassus,23 distinguished among the Romans because of both his family and his wealth, accepted the praetorship and marched out against Spartacus with six additional legions. When he arrived on the scene, he took control of the two consular legions as well. 24 Some think it happened differently, that after Crassus engaged Spartacus with his whole army and lost, he randomly chose by lot a tenth from all eight legions and, unconcerned with the large number, put to death upwards of 4,000 soldiers.

The copy inscribed on bronze tablets and set up at the entrance of his dynastic Mausoleum in Rome does not survive, but a copy is preserved on an inscription on the temple of Rome and Augustus at Ancyra (modern Ankara, Turkey), as well as on two other more fragmentary inscriptions. In addition to the Latin original, which is translated here, a Greek paraphrase was included on the inscription in Ancyra, for the benefit of the native Greek-speaking population in the East. The Res Gestae (literally “Things Done”), as the original document is commonly called after its Latin title, contains the information that Augustus wished to be memorialized about his life.
