Wells舗s Martians all look exactly alike, speak the same language, and act like the moving parts of a vast machine. 舡 This semi-satirical piece applies the concept of evolution postulated by Charles Darwin ( 1809-1882) and popularized by the one professor at the Normal School of Science Wells idolized, Thomas Huxley (1825-1895). While evolution is the subject of the essay, the style derives from Thomas Carlyle ( 1795-1881), one of Wells舗s favorite writers and author of Sartor Resartus: The Life and Opinions of Herr TeufelsdrɆckh ( 1833-1834), and Carlyle was himself influenced by yet another of Wells舗s favorites, Laurence Sterne ( 1713-1768), author of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759舒1767).
